Unlike traditional pillowcases, Shams are fancier and more substantial covers for bed pillows. They serve a more decorative purpose; they match the duvet, pull together the colors in the room or help set a theme.
Pillow shams are nothing new. Shams made centuries ago by skilled sewers and designers are collectibles and museum pieces today. The pillow covers made excellent needlework practice projects with a practical application.
Shams are the pillows that usually go right in front of the headboard. They’re not meant for sleeping on, just decoration. They’re different from a basic pillowcase in that they have flanges around the edges, and are meant to add color/texture to anchor the rest of your pillow collection. There are three sizes: standard shams (20″ by 26″), king shams (20″ by 36″), and European shams or a boudoir sham (12″ by 16″). Also, pillow shams can be more beneficial than a specifically-purchased “decorative pillow,” due to the fact that they are usually washable and easier to replace when worn.
