A noble heirloom inspired by the storied Army & Navy tea cloth tradition — handmade filet lace, embroidered organdy panels, and fine linen united in meticulous detail.
The tradition of the Army & Navy tablecloth traces back to the American Civil War, when alternating panels of lace and linen were fashioned into practical tea cloths for officers in the field — a gesture of civility preserved amidst uncertainty. Materials were scarce; beauty was improvised from what was available. Function met refinement.
In the 1950s and 60s, after WWII, this tradition evolved. Heirloom-quality tablecloths featuring handmade filet lace and finely embroidered organdy were created for American military officers posted in the East. They became symbols of continuity — reminders of home carried across oceans.
This example reflects that era with quiet authority.
Each 5″ x 5.5″ organdy square is individually embroidered with chrysanthemums — long regarded in Japan as a symbol of the sun and perfection. The disciplined unfolding of its petals was once suggested by Confucius as an object of meditation. A fitting motif for a cloth rooted in order, structure, and grace.
Look closely and the craftsmanship reveals itself:
long and short satin stitch, seed stitch, stem stitch, pull thread, shadow stitch, chain stitch — all executed by skilled needlewomen. The tiny, nearly invisible stitches securing each organdy insert to the linen ground are a testament to patience. Nothing is hurried. Nothing is approximate.
The handmade filet lace borders complete the composition with architectural precision. Alternating panels of lace and linen echo the earliest military tea cloths — but here rendered in full mid-century refinement.
